Fat Transfer Recovery Period

I am 55 yrs old woman looking forward to have a fat transfer. How long is the healing process?
Fat transfer recovery has several phases.  Shortly after surgery, your face will look more swollen because of localized edema (swelling) which will resolve after several days. Bruising may be seen during this time.  The second phase takes longer to resolve.  This phase involves the incorporation of fat into the face.  Some fat will be removed by the body and during this phase, the swelling will resolve further.  I find that the long term appearance is usually seen around 4 weeks after the procedure.

How Permanent is Fat Transfer?
The technique of fat transfer has been improved with the use of delicate transfer of fat with low pressure removal with handheld syringes, centrifuge to remove excess fluid and injection with blunt tipped needles which inject tiny amounts allowing for better in growth of blood supply.   With proper technique, called the "Coleman technique" fat transfer will have excellent long term survival.  Use of liposuction machines and thick injections will have the opposite effect.

Fat Injections Might Help Depressed Scars.
Every scar is unique in its anatomic location, thickness, density of the surrounding tissue and pigmentation. Therefore, every treatment for scar improvement is unique as well. Fat injection will be beneficial if the tissue surrounding it is not too tight and allows the fat to stretch the depressed scar. Sometimes a scar revision can be done in which the tight tissue fibers are released allowing the scar to stretch. A photograph of your scar would be helpful.
